
Qing Richard Lu, PhD

Dr. Lu currently is appointed as Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology, the Scientific Director at the Brain Tumor Center, and a Beatrice C. Lampkin endowed Chair in Cancer Epigenetics, at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, OH, USA. His research aims to understand how distinct glial cell subtypes (oligodendrocytes, astrocytes and Schwann cells) in the central and peripheral nervous systems are generated, how they are regenerated after injury, and how their progenitors are transformed into cancerous cells under pathological conditions. A major focus of his research is to elucidate the transcriptional, posttranscriptional, epigenetic and signaling regulatory networks underlying neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis, developmental neurological disorders such as CHARGE syndrome, MOWAT-WILSON syndrome and autisms, as well as brain tumorigenesis. The research goal is to develop effective therapies by promoting nerve regeneration or functional recovery in various neurological and white matter diseases, while blocking brain tumor initiation and progression. He has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Cell, Nature Medicine, Nature neuroscience, Cancer Cell, Neuron, Developmental Cell, Nature communications, PNAS, Development, Journal of Neuroscience, Glia, etc. He has received many awards including the Harry Weaver Junior Faculty Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Basil O’Conner Scholarship Award from March of Dimes Birth Defect Foundation, Brain tumor Team Award from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and the Javits Neuroscience Award from NIH/NINDS, USA.
