Jose A. Castro-Rodriguez, MD, PhD

Jose A. Castro-Rodriguez, MD, PhD, was born in Peru and graduated in Medicine in 1987 from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in Lima, Peru where he completed his residency in Pediatrics in 1991. He was a Fellow in Pediatric Pulmonary in Santiago, Chile at the Universidad de Chile (1994-1996). In 1997 Dr. Castro-Rodriguez took a position as a Research Fellow at the University of Arizona in Tucson, US, where he worked with the Children’s Respiratory Study cohort and studied in the Master in Public Health program. One of his major studies was the creation of the Asthma Predictive Index (published in 2000), with more than one thousand three hundred fifty citations and incorporated to international asthma guidelines (e.g. GINA, NAEPP). He was awarded with the “Master of LatinAmerican Pediatric Pulmonology” from the LatinAmerican Pediatric Pulmonology Society (Punta Cana, R. Dominicana, 2018); Worldwide Scientific Prize from the IUTLD (Montreal, Canada, 2002); the Pediatric Year in Review Paper (New Engl J Med 2000; 343: 538-543, with more than 1,250 citations) at the ATS International Conference, San Francisco, USA (2001); and the Peruvian Scientific Prize from CONICYT, Lima, Peru (1993).

Currently, he is an Associated Professor in the Division of Pediatrics at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile in Santiago, where he works since 2007. In Chile Dr. Castro-Rodriguez has been leading a large and productive group of researchers at his Institution. His main areas of interest are recurrent wheeze, asthma phenotypes, impact of respiratory viruses (especially adenovirus) on respiratory health, therapy for acute and chronic asthma management, and epigenetic of maternal obesity on asthma (fetal programming).
