Introduction to special series: “Clinical Pearls in Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism”
Pediatric endocrinology brings both molecular and clinical science together and is a field where the advancements in molecular biology is translated into clinical practice to understand, diagnose, and apply up to date treatment modalities for endocrine problems in children and adolescents.
In this special series of Pediatric Medicine journal, we present a wide variety of both common and controversial topics in pediatric endocrinology. For example, one of the most debated and controversial area in pediatric endocrinology is transgender care in children and adolescents. Despite growing evidence that suggests improved physical and mental health outcomes when appropriate transgender care is provided, recent new policies on gender affirming care are negatively impacting transgender and non-binary youth to access needed care. In this series, we addressed gender dysphoria and gender affirming care in pediatrics as well as resources for physicians to aid in diagnosis and management (Table 1).
